Historical Context: British Women Seeking Indian Husbands
There was a time when American or European men were very much desired. But now it seems Indian Desi men have come to the forefront. Under the Foreign Marriage Act of 1969, foreign marriages have seen a striking increase of 60% over the last 10 years. A fun fact: did you know British Queen Victoria, who was also given the title Empress of India, had a romantic relationship with an Indian servant, Abdul Karim? This relationship was tried to be hidden by the British monarchy for more than 100 years. Nevertheless, a 60% increase is a significant development. So, what explains this?
Attractiveness of Indian Men to Foreign Women
First of all, European women marrying Indian men is not a new trend. In the 17th century, when the East India Company established a colony in Bombay, they brought many widows from Britain because before this, British women were banned from coming to India. Even when there weren’t enough widows, they started to bring orphan girls over 13 years old to India. Under the assimilation policy, babies with Indian fathers and British mothers were considered Indian by birth but culturally British.
Colonial Legacies and Intercultural Marriages
In the 20th century, after the Second World War, there was a shortage of labor in Europe and America. During this time, Britain started to send soldiers to the UK and other places. There’s also an incident from the First World War: to guard France, 1.4 million soldiers were deployed, and they interacted with many French women who served them as hostesses. Many affairs and interactions between Indian men and French women occurred during this time, leading to marriages. Soldiers James Boha Khan and Abbas Ali were famous for their intercultural marriages during this period. From this, historically, the trend started.
Modern Factors: Reformist Attitudes and Physical Appeal
But today, there are many factors that make Indian men very attractive to foreigners, like their reformist attitudes and looks. Recently, on a French dating site, they found out which countries’ men are the hottest lovers. They conducted an online survey for this, in which Indian males ranked 7th. Another survey asked which country’s men are the hottest, and here too, Indian men ranked 5th. Today, AI has also recognized that Indian men are the most attractive. In 2023, a British AI-based company called “Pour Moi” surveyed 50 most attractive nationalities based on AI, and India was also in the top. This somewhat has to do with skin color too. India has a craze for white skin, while the West has a craze for brown/tan skin.
The Role of Skin Tone and Changing Beauty Standards
The story behind this is unknown to many. In 1920, the situation was different; tanned skin was considered poor or lower class. Women used to avoid becoming tanned because white skin was considered higher class. Overnight, the concept changed in 1923 when the top icon Coco Chanel returned with tanned skin after her trip. After this, tanned skin became a trend, and everyone was ready to do anything to get tanned skin. Ironically, if you were rich, you could afford vacations, yachts, etc. On the other hand, tanning also became a symbol of women’s liberation.
Cultural Values and Relationship Dynamics
According to the Sun Time organization, Chanel’s public image played a significant role in this. That’s why this became a symbol throughout the country. For the first time in history in 1947, a tanned model appeared on the cover page of Vogue magazine. The University of Wyoming, by surveying college students, proved that a tanned golden skin tone is more preferred, which also impacts the selection of sexual partners. And you can find all shades of brown in Indian men.
Another reason can be lower rates of infidelity. Americans and Europeans, on average, have more than 10 sexual partners in their lives, while Indians are at the bottom of this index. According to experts, fewer sexual partners lead to happier marriage events. Basically, the more loyalty you want toward your wife. Besides loyalty, being emotional is also a very good quality that keeps Indian men on the selection list. Some experts have also declared Indian males as the best husbands. Their logic is that emotional people believe in true love and long-term relationships. On the other side, they say that Western boys have a Superman culture. This ideology makes them tough, emotionless, and self-centered, and they can’t become vulnerable in front of their partners. It is proven that in the 21st century, many Indian males prefer long-term relationships over casual ones. That’s why their nature is family-oriented.
In a community survey in 2019, 94% of Indian immigrants with kids were stably married, whereas only 66% of marriages were stable in Western countries. Another significant problem in the West is the nuclear family. In India, the divorce rate is only 1%, whereas in the US, the divorce rate is 50%. Firstly, out-of-marriage children are common in Western countries, and the major one is single parenting. Twelve percent of children live with a single parent, and out of this, 90% live with their mother, who is financially insolvent in most cases. On the other hand, 63% of Indians live with their elderly parents in joint families, and they are kids and family-oriented. Additionally, Indians are highly educated; 70% of Indians are graduates compared to 28% of US nationals. The average income of Indians is $39,000, which is much higher than that of US citizens.
Soft Power and Cultural Influence
Now let’s talk about the recently rising soft power of India. Today, Indians own 9% of the companies in Silicon Valley and have a significant soft influence. Every year, 17 million tourists come to India, out of which 40% are females.
Then talking about Indian movies, which have made Indian culture rich and vibrant, popular worldwide. In 1951, Raj Kapoor’s movie “Awara” was released. This movie captured audiences all over the world, especially in Russia. Basically, Indian films and movies have played a significant role in highlighting India. Along with this, Indian food is also very tasty. Indian cuisine is the world’s 4th favorite, and considering the importance of food diplomacy, in 2017, the Indian government proposed to Japan to have more Indian restaurants in Japan.
Considering all these factors, Indians are at the forefront in the group of international marriages in the US. Fifty-eight percent of Indians are involved in international marriages. But last but not least, if we scrutinize the list carefully, we can see that the sex ratio of Western countries is also involved in this. Western countries and Russia have more females, whereas China, the Middle East, and Indian subcontinental countries have more male sex ratios. But if you look at all these countries, the only country with stable marriages, liberal, and democratically diversified and inclusive cultural values is India. But this is my personal belief.
